Episode 4 of the JRNY Podcast features a deeply personal and honest conversation with Shane Hasler. Shane is more than a guest. He’s a close family friend whose journey reflects the core themes behind JRNY — resilience, discipline, perspective, and continuing forward when life becomes difficult.
This episode is also a first for the JRNY Podcast. It was recorded via Zoom, allowing Shane to share his story from his current environment while still capturing the same grounded and authentic conversation that defines the show.
Facing Cancer at a Young Age
At the centre of the conversation is Shane’s experience with cancer.
Shane was born with a genetic condition that eventually led to tumours developing in his body. For years he experienced symptoms without understanding what was happening. During sport or training he would often become sick and struggle physically, but the cause remained unknown.
The diagnosis eventually came in his early twenties after severe pain sent him to hospital. Doctors discovered a tumour and explained the seriousness of the situation.
In that moment, Shane made peace with the possibility that he might not survive. Rather than telling everyone and allowing fear to take over, he chose to spend the time quietly with family, focusing on appreciating the moments he had.
The surgery that followed removed his kidney and the tumours, marking the beginning of a long recovery.
The Mental Battle After Survival
Surviving cancer was only part of the journey.
Shane speaks openly about the mental challenges that followed. After the surgery he struggled with anxiety and constant thoughts that the cancer might return. Even after years of successful check-ups, the fear lingered.
"For many people, the mental impact of serious illness lasts long after the physical recovery."
For Shane, discipline and training became the path forward.
Boxing, Discipline, and Rebuilding
Boxing became the structure that helped him rebuild.
Shane first started boxing as a teenager after his father pushed him into the gym. At the time it felt like a non-negotiable commitment, but it eventually became something he loved.
After recovering from cancer, he returned to the sport with a new mindset. Eight months later he won the Victorian State Title. He went on to win an Australian title and an interstate title, building a successful amateur career before eventually turning professional.
Training gave him purpose. It provided structure, discipline, and a goal to work toward during a time when life could easily have gone in the opposite direction.
Family, Fatherhood, and Perspective
Another major part of Shane’s life is his role as a father. His relationship with his daughter is something he values deeply. Fatherhood changed the way he sees responsibility, time, and priorities.
The conversation reflects on how becoming a parent often shifts perspective. It also brings a new appreciation for the sacrifices and challenges parents face while raising their children.
Looking back, Shane now recognises how the discipline his father instilled in him during his younger years helped build the resilience he relies on today.
Building Something New
In recent years Shane has started building a new chapter. After years working as a boilermaker and fabricator, he began exploring entrepreneurship and eventually launched an e-commerce business built around outdoor gear.
His brand focuses on helping people reconnect with nature. The first product is a camping hammock designed to make it easier for people to spend time outdoors, disconnect from technology, and slow down.
For Shane, the mission behind the brand is personal. Nature, fitness, and discipline played a huge role in helping him rebuild his life after illness and adversity. Now he wants to help others experience the same benefits.
A New Perspective on Life
One of the strongest themes throughout the episode is gratitude. Experiences like serious illness change the way people see the world. For Shane, it shifted his focus toward appreciating time, relationships, and everyday moments.
Instead of constantly chasing the next achievement, the conversation highlights the value of presence, perspective, and living intentionally.
This episode delivers practical insights on:
- •Facing mortality and shifting priorities
- •Using discipline to rebuild mental strength
- •The lasting impact of serious illness
- •Fatherhood and generational lessons
- •Finding purpose through entrepreneurship
Shane’s story reflects the core message behind the JRNY Podcast — everyone faces roadblocks, risks, and setbacks. What matters is how we respond to them.
